Alutgama today is a fish-market town, but century ago it was a centre for the production plumbago, tea, coral, lime, and arrack. Alutgama the place where tourists should deviate from main road to travel inland about seven kilometres to the house and garden called Brief, open to public.
Brief was the home of the late Bevis Bawa, one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent personalities of recent times. The garden, with its terraces, meandering walkways, and delightful vegetation, together with the sprawling house, which contains Bawa’s own sculptures and the paintings of friends, make for a worthwhile and unique Sri Lankan excursion.
